Toronto Affordable Housing

An international competition proposal that treats affordable housing as a lively, dignified urban community rather than a collection of anonymous blocks.

This project is our proposal for the international Toronto Affordable Housing Challenge. The main task was to challenge the stigma surrounding social or affordable housing, proving that reasonable cost can—and should—coexist with high-quality architecture, colour and dignified public space.

Instead of monotonous housing blocks, we proposed an urban ecosystem where architecture creates community by bringing homes together with pedestrian promenades, green areas and commercial spaces at ground level. Modular facade panels with lively yellow and green accents break down the scale of the building, giving each section a visual identity and a sense of positive energy.

The ground floor is dedicated to public life, with cafés and open terraces, small shops and flexible service kiosks. This creates a safe, car-free environment for children and pedestrians. Every apartment has a glass-fronted balcony and tall glazing for maximum natural light, an important part of wellbeing in a high-density urban setting.

Affordable housing should be more than a roof over one's head; it should be a place residents are proud to call home. Long timber benches, linear ground lighting, low planting and decorative trees soften the concrete structure, while small urban pockets encourage meetings between neighbours. Modular construction systems support fast, efficient building and keep costs under control without sacrificing the project's character.
